Call for Projects! Health Impact Assessment
County seeks municipal HIA project proposals
Kane County has been awarded a 2014 Local Technical Assistance (LTA) grant from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to prepare a health impact assessment (HIA) for a Kane County municipality! Kane County will partner with CMAP to perform the HIA, while also training CMAP staff in the HIA process. When finished, the HIA will serve as an example for the Chicago region.
HIA is an emerging planning tool used to evaluate how a plan, program, or policy will affect the overall health of a population. An HIA is designed to inform policy makers before a plan, program, or policy is adopted. The topic of study selected by the County and CMAP will be a municipal plan, program, or policy that directly implements CMAP's GO TO 2040 Plan and the Kane County 2040 Plan. Kane County Farm Bureau Recognized for Exceptional Leadership in Growing for Kane Development!
The Kane County Farm Bureau was recognized with an Outstanding Program Award at the 99th annual meeting of the Illinois Farm Bureau held in Chicago, December 7th-10th. This award honored the Farm Bureau's work with Kane County
 on the Growing for Kane Health Impact Assessment which led to the creation and adoption of the Growing for Kane Program. The Farm Bureau's leadership was, and will continue to be, instrumental in developing the Growing for Kane Program and its associated policies, which may include:
- Introducing the use of term easements to go along with the existing use of perpetual easements in order to stimulate the growth of fresh produce, meats and dairy for local consumption
- The utilization of tax credits, leases and financial incentives to help attract new people to farming while retaining and scaling up existing operations
- The prioritization of farms that grow fresh produce, meats, and dairy for local consumption including, but not limited to, farmers markets, hospitals, schools and other institutions, restaurants, food suppliers and home consumption
- The allowance of farming on all sized parcels in all parts of Kane County
- The coordination of preseason contracts or other agreements to grow for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, with a percentage of the product required to be distributed to the County's vulnerable population

Kane-DuPage Water Conservation Seminar
Come learn about current and future storm water regulations
The Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District will be hosting a Current Storm Water Regulations and Policies Seminar on March 12, 2014 at Hickory
 Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles. This seminar will be ideal for planners, engineers and consultants as it will give an in depth overview of existing local, state and federal regulations as well as a projection of future regulations. Sessions will include updated regulatory information from the Army Corps of Engineers, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Kane County's recently adopted 2040 Green Infrastructure Plan can be a source for communities looking to address storm water issues. The Plan provides a framework for green infrastructure planning at the regional, community, neighborhood and site levels. The Plan has identified existing green infrastructure linkages that should be enhanced and has also outlined best management practices that should be utilized including: bioswales, rain gardens, green roofs, strategic tree plantings, open space preservation and permeable pavement. The County is now in the beginning stages of implementing the Plan.

This is the place to learn about cutting-edge planning innovations
On Friday, January 31st the Urban Planning and Policy Student Association at the University of Illinois at Chicago will host its 4th annual Urban Innovation Symposium! This two-part, day-long event will bring together a diverse group of leading professionals for a series of presentations on innovative solutions to urban challenges within the context of the "back to the city" movement. As more and more people have been trading in their suburban lifestyle and migrating to urban areas, these areas have been grappling with how to respond to the population influx while also dealing with aging infrastructure. This has led to innovative solutions that can be applied to many cities with aging urban areas. Come learn how state-of-the-art planning innovations can be utilized in your city!

Transportation Webinars Can Advance Efforts in Your Community
APBP is offering webinars throughout 2014
The Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals is hosting a series of webinars which may be of interest. These webinars are a great way to bring stakeholders, colleagues and clients together to explore bicycle and pedestrian issues and build support for active transportation.
